This guide is intended for individuals who will work with communities asthey mobilize to improvematernal and newborn health (MNH). It was created as a supplement to How to Mobilize Communities for

Health and Social Change.

This guide has three parts:

1. An overview of maternal and newborn health
2. A walk through the steps of the mobilization process,following the phases of the community action cycle.This is the “how-to” portion of the guide,containing all of the essential instructions for carrying out a community mobilization initiative toimprove the health of pregnant women and newborns
3. An annex whichcontains a series of 19 tools
