Media Preparedness Training for Outbreaks

Operating as a nine-month fellowship in Nigeria, this competency-based capacity strengthening program equips media professionals to effectively communicate technical health data during infectious disease outbreaks. A joint effort between the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, the African Field Epidemiology Network, and Breakthrough ACTION, the curriculum merges epidemiology, infodemic management, and social and behavior change principles. Through a combination of interactive workshops, field experience, and targeted mentorship, journalists learn to translate complex surveillance data, combat health misinformation, and foster community trust. Public health agencies and communication managers can utilize this training model to build sustainable networks of skilled media advocates for future emergency responses.
