Prevention against Emerging Infectious Diseases: An opportunity for Inclusive Health

The resource is a comprehensive report by Handicap International – Humanity & Inclusion (HI) on their intervention in Somalia/Somaliland to promote the inclusion and rights of persons with disabilities, focusing on their response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It outlines a study conducted in collaboration with WHO to understand the perceptions and barriers to COVID-19 vaccination among persons with disabilities in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps. The study employed a mixed-methods approach using WHO’s behavioral and social drivers (BeSD) tools and provided both quantitative and qualitative data on the factors influencing vaccination. Key findings highlight the association of age, gender, and disability type with perceptions and motivations for vaccination, leading to recommendations for enhancing inclusive health services and advocating for better access and participation for persons with disabilities.

Gender and Immunization: Opportunities for Action

The global immunization community has only recently recognized that gender-related barriers lie on a critical pathway to achieving high and equitable vaccination coverage. As part of its commitment to advancing this knowledge base, in the summer of 2022, MOMENTUM Routine Immunization Transformation and Equity developed a four-session month-long course entitled “Gender and Immunization: Opportunities for Action.” The overall goal of the course was to provide national and sub-national participants from low-and middle-income countries with the knowledge, tools, skills, capacity, and confidence to reduce gender barriers to immunization and document their efforts to advance this nascent and critical technical area. The course was held on the Sabin Vaccine Institute’s Boost learning platform. The following gender course materials are meant to serve as a practical reference to help inform and guide the work of immunization professionals in LMICs, global health students, program implementers, and policymakers interested in gender mainstreaming in immunization.

Addressing stigma and discrimination toward children and youth with disabilities through SBC – Disability Toolkit

This toolkit was developed to help achieve a world where “all children, including those with disabilities, live in barrier-free and inclusive communities, where persons with disabilities are embraced and supported, across the life cycle, to realize and defend their rights, and to achieve full and effective participation” (UNICEF Disability Inclusion Policy and Strategy, 2022-2030).

SBC programming has a critically important and urgent role to play in identifying and implementing solutions that empower children with disabilities and their families and support their social inclusion. We are therefore pleased to share this practical guide to understanding and tackling the social norms and behaviors that limit the inclusion of children with disabilities in their communities.

This toolkit aims to provide insights, tools, and resources to help you understand the barriers to the inclusion of children with disabilities, with a focus on stigma and discrimination, and to offer practical support for designing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating social and behavior change (SBC) interventions that include children with disabilities and their families and empower them to be included in their communities and enjoy the same opportunities as their peers.

This toolkit comprises an introduction, a foundational module, seven thematic modules, a user guide and a Theory of Change (PowerPoint presentation).

The modules are as follows:

Module 0: Foundation
Module 1: Inclusive evidence generation
Module 2: Empowering children and youth with disabilities and their families
Module 3: Understanding and engaging communities
Module 4: Building disability-inclusive services
Module 5: Strengthening partnerships for advocacy
Module 6: SBC for disability inclusion in humanitarian action
Module 7: Monitoring, Evaluating, and Measuring
